Grand Children or Siblings (Not live together)

Check to see whether your case meets the following five conditions before reviewing this flowchart:

(1) You are the main source of economic support for the family member.

** If someone else has a priority obligation to support the family member (e.g., a parent, spouse, or sibling), the family member will generally be a dependent of the person who earned the higher income in the previous year.

(2) The family member’s annual income is less than one-half of your annual income.

(3) The family member’s annual income is less than 1.3 million yen (1.8 million yen if aged 60 or above, or disabled).

(4)The allowance you remit to the family member is more than his or her annual income.

(5) In some cases, if the family member is married, he or she may not be certified as a dependent, even if he or she meets the conditions under (1)-(4) above.

The final decisions on dependent certification will be made by the Health Insurance Society.
This flowchart is only a rough guide to dependent certification. The Health Insurance Society may deny dependent certification if it deems certification would be inappropriate based on the facts of a particular case, as determined through a strict and impartial review of the application documents.
